Beijing, as the capital and political of centre of China, covers more than 16,000 km2 and has the residents believed more than 20 million. As a transportation hub of nine Expressways, eleven National Highways, eight major railway lines reaching out to most directions of China, even out China far to Moscow, and the airlines connecting Beijing with almost every country in the world and most major cities domestic and abroad, Beijing has a sophisticated transportation cobweb of 6 ring roads, horizontal and vertical city roads, 9 lines of subway.

Compared to its complicated transportation system of Beijing, the solution to the public transportation in Beijing is much simpler. There are three major ways one can choose:

Subway
Subway, in Beijing, is most convenient and efficient public transportation tool. Beijing has 9 lines of subway (15 lines till 2015), everyone can pay RMB 3.0 flat fare (about Euro 30 cent) or RMB 2.0 by Smartcard (detailed explanation come later) to take all subways.

Taxi

Taxi, is also a convenient and surely comfort tool to travel in Beijing, but may not be efficient due to critical traffic problem in Beijing. There are about 70,000 taxis running 7X24 on the street of Beijing. It is unnecessary for people to call for a taxi since most time you can find Taxi waiting for customers. The cost starts at RMB 10 for the first 3 km and RMB2.0 per additional kilometer. Between 11 pm and 5 am, the fee is increased by 20%, starting at RMB 11 and increasing at a rate of RMB 2.4 RMB per km.

Bus

Bus is most common way to take by many people in Beijing. There are more than 700 routes for bus transportation on 6 Ring Road from 2nd Ring Road to 7th Ring Road (the 7th is planning and partly constructed) and countless city roads.
Bus Lines: Buses in Beijing are numbered from 1 to 999. Line numbers in different range means different service areas as follows.
Lines 1-199: Services in inner city. For most travelers, these lines are adequate for their visits.
Lines 200-299: Night services in inner city.
Lines 300-399: Services in outer city / suburb. Travelers should take these lines for their visits to some remote places such as the Summer Palace.
Lines 400-599: Community services/ service to outer city or suburbs.
Lines 600-799: Services with routes both in inner city and outer city. Usually these lines have longer routes.

Smartcard

Smartcard, Beijing Municipal Administration and Communications Card is a store-value contactless smart card used in Beijing, China, for public transportation and related uses. The card is often called Yikatong, which means "one card pass" in Chinese.
The card can be bought with a deposit of RMB 20 at most ticket counters at Beijing Subway stations and some bus stations. The cards can be refilled in units of RMB 10 at these counters, and by units of RMB 20, 50, or 100 in Beijing Subway ticket machines. The deposit is used to cover non-sufficient funds for a single trip, and can be refunded when the card is returned.
The card is also used pay taxi and can now be used at many supermarkets and restaurants, such as KFC franchises.
